Many believe that this world is broken and beyond help. As such, we as Christians must find as many people as we can and get them off this sinking planet and on the "bus" to heaven. Is that what God says? Is that our purpose?Did God simply create man and put him on this planet so that after a time he could send the buses to pick up those who have a ticket to heaven? Did he make this world lost, evil and broken down so we'd want to get on that bus? Many live as if this were so, but let's look at what the Bible actually says.
Knowing our short attention spans, God gets to the point in the very first book of the Bible. We see in Genesis 1 that God created the world and all that is in it. He created it, very good. Verse 28 tells us that we are commanded to fill the whole earth and subdue it. To take care of it under him and enjoy the fruits of that labor.
We also see in chapter 3 that man, never being quite satisfied, was tempted to be, as God, rather than living under God. Isn't that the case today? God in his great wisdom created a perfect world, a perfect system to live within, and what do we do? We decide that we know better, or perhaps we're just too lazy to see what that system is. What happens when we take charge? Just look around. Everything begins to fall apart, families, relationships, churches, government control, business and the economy, all become perverted. Now what do we do? Bury our heads in the sand and wait for the bus to come and take us to heaven?
Actually, God calls us to sanctification and righteousness. Does that mean that we are to sit and wait with "good and holy attitudes" until the bus comes? Does it mean that we are to stand outside the bus terminal and call out to those who pass by to see if they want to join us on the bus one day? Did God purpose for us to be a beaten and crushed people, huddled together waiting for the bus?
That doesn't sound like what I've read in the Bible. That doesn't sound like God. Consider passages that refer to God's people as a light to the lost world. Consider that God calls us to be holy as he is holy.
Consider that he never revoked his initial call to us in Genesis 1:28. We are still to fill the earth and take care of it under him and according to his law. We are not to create some "new system," some new thinking because his ways are outdated. We are not to cower in the corner and wait. Remember the parable of the talents? The servant who hid his and did nothing is condemned. The servants who were productive with theirs were blessed.
What is your purpose in life? To serve God? What does that mean?
What is your purpose in life? To glorify God? What does that mean?
What IS your purpose in life?
Think about that and we will explore it further in the next few discussions.
