Standing alone. There is a great example in Jeremiah 35. The people are called the Recabites, a family that was singled out by God as an example to Israel, an example of a family that was obedient. While the people of Israel were busy rebelling against God in every way this family was being fully obedient to their patriarch and family leaders.
In our time we live in a culture when disobedience and disrespect are the watchwords. Children grow up to be disobedient and disrespectful because we teach them how by our own lives. We don't bother to teach them obedience and respect for others. Perhaps we don't even know what it looks like anymore because its so rare.
God says in John 14:15 "if you love me you will obey me." Will we? Will we teach our children to? Do you have a good handle on God's commands and principles for life so that you can be obedient? Do you study His Word looking for them? Time is short. Give yourself a blessing and your children blessings for generations. Learn how He calls you to live from His Word and be obedient to it. Grow in maturity and sanctification. Read the account of the Recabites and see how God honored them by using them as an example in a rebellious world. Perhaps you can be a Recabite too.

I am nearing the end of the very (VERY) rough draft of a journal/survey of the OT that I'm writing and currently posting on MySpace. I came across your comments on "Be a Recabite." I hope it's okay -- but I copied/pasted a short section and gave all credit to you. I don't know who my readers are -- I think most of them are my friends and my girls' friends, but everyday the number grows. Thanks for your posting of spiritual truth.

Rebecca, feel free to use the post any way that is helpful and I look forward to reading your journal.
I love the story of the recabites. In fact my email name is "recabite" and has been for about 5 years. To add a bit of weirdness -- my last name is Slagel. God bless you!
This might seem a little bit over the edge for some, but have you looked at the significance in that the Recabite's were not allowed to drink wine nor live in houses. This would be (although not totally descriptive) very close if not actually a clan of Nazarites. Consistently throughout the bible references are made regarding this holy order of priests, with the most common element of no wine (with the exception of Sampson). To not drink wine was a way of showing God that you could sacrifice worldly things to achieve oneness with the Lord. To be set apart unto Him. Also in rabbinical law a father could vow his children to be set apart to the Lord and this would then require the descendant to remain under this extreme faith walk all the days of there lives. Just a thought.
If this idea is true, that would mean that there still are Recabite Nazarites in walking this earth (verse 35:19)
